New Intel 3.2gb System Almost Ready

By Darryl Hoytt on October 7, 2004 10:41 PM | 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks

I pretty much have my new system ready. I just need to get my 73 GB SCSI ultra 160 hard drive back from Seagate RMA. Was doing the delayed write thing and then would disappear from the OS and would not be seen on boot-up from the LSI SYM2910 dual Ultra SCSI 160 card I'm using.

I had to get the drivers for my All-In-Wonder X9800 128mb card straightened out because it was flaky with reboots occurring all the time with the Microsoft driver but once I installed ATI's Catalyst drivers everything just went really smooth.

I got this 500 watt Vigor power supply with the blue lights that all those people who like to mod their system like. Looks pretty cool and I' may do a little modding of my systems in the future but function first for me! Thing is I may need a 600 watt plus power supply for the amount of things I will have in this system.

This new system will be running the Intel 3.2 GHz E chip with 1mb of onboard level 2 cache. That’s almost as much as the Cache on my Xeon process in my multimedia (music) server.

Everything is going great this case I purchased earlier in the year has 2 12x12 cm fans (almost 5.25"). So the ventilation will be really nice plus I may modify things and place a third fan in the system even though my power supply provides really 2 additional fans. Since I run so many drives at one time I am considering this putting this extra fan in the system.

I think I will also get another Adaptec 39160 for this system and move the LSI to another system. Then I will take what is now my main system and keep the 29160 in that and build it into a rack enclosure or use it as a TV in one of my rooms since that system has an All-in-wonder Radeon in it. Would make a nice Tivo system! In fact I think I now have at least 6 and maybe more Ati-all-in-wonder cards of various models. I can do Tivo all over the house!

I really need to get this main system up though. The current configuration was supposed to be a temporary thing but it has stretched too long. I have to have a house fan blowing on this system constantly because it has 6 tightly packed ultra 160 SCSI hard drives running in it! The ventilation is horrible and I keep kicking the darned fan! Plus my C: which is only a 9gb but fast drive is too full to be able to accept all of the security updates the OS and various software packages run even though I have moved some programs to other drives.

Anyway this is what I have been doing lately late nights trying to see how to best leverage parts from one system to the next without spending too much money. Once this is all set I will do as I always do leave it alone except minor tweaks and enjoy the setup! I unfortunately let this go a little too long and needed more updating than I realized.

I still need more RAM and one more hard drive and to modify my music sever some more and update my Linux system get my HP-UX system updated, get space for my Solaris system, get my x86 Solaris system up again....oh well will update again much sooner than last time!

Oh yea and also have other projects and personal things going on!

Too much to do!... naaaaww I am just doing it!
